Management of the Cultural Heritage
The Faculty of Philosophy and History at Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski' is one of the best friends of ‘Plovdiv 2019'. The master's programme in ‘Management of the Cultural Heritage' trains managers of cultural heritage. The programme is oriented to the management of cultural heritage, which implies the absorption of competencies for its institutional infrastructure and legislation, cultural politics towards heritage, marketing and advertising, but also the development of skills for its preservation, socialization and animation.
These young people are willing to help Plovdiv and prove that this is the City - Cultural Capital of Europe 2019.
The master's programme in the ‘Management of Cultural Heritage' has been developed according to the requirements for accreditation and aims to provide broader theoretical and practical knowledge about the specifics of the cultural heritage of Bulgaria, paying attention to its complex nature. The training provides knowledge about the basic types of heritage, presented in a chronological order (from pre-antiquity and antiquity to the period of socialism and post-socialism), typological order (archaeological, historical, ethnographic, literary, artistic, etc.) and formal signature order (material, immaterial, virtual, etc.). The programme is oriented to the management of cultural heritage, which implies the absorption of competencies for its institutional infrastructure and legislation, cultural politics towards heritage, marketing and advertising, but also the development of skills for its preservation, socialization and animation. This enables students to learn how to construct strategies for the protection and integration of cultural heritage both in a museum, as well as a tourist environment.
During the training, students can deepen their professional competence by choosing one of two specialized modules: ‘Cultural Heritage and Museums' or ‘Animation of the Cultural Heritage'. Under the programme, they acquire skills to develop projects in the field of cultural heritage. The programme also offers training in a foreign language with a focus on the specialized vocabulary with which to enrich communication and presentation skills.
The aim of the Master's programme is to deepen and further specialize the training of graduates holding a bachelor's degree in ethnology and/or bachelors from other disciplines and to give an additional profiled and interdisciplinary training in the field of ethnology with the aim of a more fruitful career development in field of management of cultural heritage.
The training's mission meets the new vision and policies on cultural heritage, which in the European Union, including Bulgaria, is considered as a value and a resource for the social and economic development of communities. It aims to give a broader theoretical and practical knowledge of the nature of the cultural heritage of Bulgaria, its storage and modern uses.
The educational process at the master's level is based on the study process during the bachelor's level. The training period is three semesters. It provides basic training in the field of cultural heritage management and specialized training for work in museums or as animators and guides.
A characteristic feature of the curriculum includes the practical training aimed at the acquisition of practical skills and the application of theoretical knowledge in a real working environment in the field of cultural heritage. It is based on personal choice and is conducted in museums, other municipal or private cultural institutions, tourist information centres, galleries, etc., depending on the student's future career plans.
Graduates can successfully work in the management and animation of cultural heritage in museums, cultural organizations and the tourism sector. They can work as:
• Managers of the cultural heritage in museums, state, municipal and non-governmental cultural organizations;
• Animators of cultural heritage in museums, state, municipal and non-governmental cultural organizations;
• Guides to museums, state, municipal and non-governmental cultural organizations;
• Experts in the field of cultural policies for heritage and cultural activities in the state and municipal cultural institutions, non-governmental organizations;
• Experts in cultural heritage in galleries, museums, community centres;
• Experts in cultural heritage in the media;
• Experts in the development, organization and realization of cultural project related to socialization and integration of cultural heritage.
How to apply
Diploma for a completed bachelor's degree with a grade no less than ‘Good' or a master's degree in all fields of sciences;
• For the master's programme there have been allocated state-sponsored places and students are ranked based on grades they will be trained with a fee set by Plovdiv University
• Fees for free admission: 650.00 BGN per semester.
