Institute for Critical Social Investigations at Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski' and the ‘Critique and Humanism 2008' Foundation

The Institute for Critical Social Investigations was founded in 1991 and since 2000 it has been a joint unit of Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski' and the ‘Critique and Humanism' Foundation. Its permanent members are 19 researchers from Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski', Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski', New Bulgarian University, the Institute for Philosophical Research and the Institute of Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and three graduate students. The policy priorities of the Institute are: overcoming the canonical boundaries between the social sciences and the humanities, finding balance between fundamental theory and empirical research, the unity of research, educational and publishing programme, linking the academia with citizenship in critical publicity. Since its inception the Institute for Critical Social Research has carried out over 50 research publishing and educational projects and has organized more than 30 conferences. For its achievements ICSI was nominated for the ‘Hannah Arendt' Award in 1998.
