Department of Theology

The Department of Theology is a new department, which has managed to successfully embed itself in the established structure of the Faculty of Philosophy and History. As an independent unit it started its activities in early 2011. Situating the department within the FPH will contribute to building a more favourable short and long-term strategy for developing and strengthening the academic area of ‘Religion and Theology', within which the degree ‘Bachelor' in Theology was established three years earlier.

Currently, the department is headed by Assoc. Prof. Maria Schnitter, Dr. habil, and its makeup includes both habilitated and non-habilitated lecturers, all holding PhD degrees. The research areas in which the members of the department work complete the rich palette of thematic research directions within the FPH. The teaching experience and their various research interests are essential factors for the implementation of the overall programme of the FPH, which entails active contribution to the realization of the full potential of Plovdiv University.

In 2013, with the active participation of lecturers of the department, the ‘Association of Theologians of Plovdiv University St. Paisii Hilendarski' was established, chaired by chief assistant professor  Margarita Zagarova, PhD. With the support of faculty leadership and the active participation of lectures of the department, as well as students, the Theology Association organized a number of university and public events, charity concerts, exhibitions, visits to social institutions, celebrations, etc. In this way, the department contributes to establishing Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski' as an important regional and national cultural and educational centre, which plays a leading role in the preservation and development of Christian culture and national traditions.

The scholarly production of the lecturers reflects their diverse research interests in theology, the relationship between theology and philosophy, religion and society, the history of church music, contemporary aspects of teaching religion, among others.

Department staff also participates in various research projects connected to the MES – ‘Qualification of pedagogical specialists', with the financial support of Operational Programme ‘Development of Human Resources', co-financed by the European Social Fund of the European Union, including projects linked to the ‘Research and Development' division of Plovdiv University ‘Paisii Hilendarski' among others.

Within the department a student choir of Eastern Church singing with artistic director Yu. Odazhiyan was founded, which is actively involved in the university holidays and celebrations.
